I guess they cut down too trees too much. The end results is complete flat, boring runs that gets swept clean of any soft snow to help you stop by snowboards, making it very dangerous (as you cannot stop!), boring and completely lack of any joy. Without trees, there is no shadow from the sun which melts the snow making what was once powder icy the very next day. Without trees, the wind blows loose snow away leaving completely icy, hard and bumpy surface that is by no means fun to ski or provides a good learning environment for kids to learn how to ski and to love the sports. I ended up spending day after day hunting for soft powder in every nook and cranny in Jackson Hole. Only found some in Pepi's run and Saratoga bowl. A lot of time wasted traveling on those icy, steep, "groomed" blue/black runs. I don't see a lot of people skiing on these groomers after lunch either, obvious I am not the only one that don't enjoy those barren landscape that is only good for snowboarders to keep sweeping the last bit of loose powder away. I am from Japan and picked up skiing around 19 in places like Shiga-Kogen. After moving to USA in 2006, I skied every winter and visited resorts all over North America. I taught my 3 kids how to ski up to advanced level. They all enjoy tree runs with powder vs. groomed icy runs. I have so much fond memories of skiing. I wish ski resorts did not cut down so much trees!
